False Pretenses is a heart-wrenching, contemporary folk record with lo-fi, psychedelic and electronic elements.

Nic Cassey’s sincere, beautiful vocals, piano, guitar and drums skills make him a well rounded and prolific songwriter. Having already recorded two studio albums with a tradition band format, Nic’s intention with the third record was to create a lo-fi bedroom record, playing all the instruments if he had to.

Despite not having the pressures of organizing a band and affording studio time, Nic nevertheless found other concerns, it was hard to record between the constant parties and overhead airplanes of Sydney's inner west. Further, getting lost in the world of production, Nic turned to his long-term collaborator, Chris Hancock. Not only did Chris record and mix Nic Cassey’s first two solo records he is also a well recognized electronic producer, so was at home with the more electronic sound Nic was going for in this 3rd record.

Nic Cassey and Chris Hancock escaped the city and recorded most of the vocals and in a bush shack out the back of Katoomba. A few extra vocals were also recorded by Sean Vandoorum late at night in Redfern artist-run space 107 Projects.
